The US region renowned for its historical past, maple syrup and bitterly cold, snow-covered winters is experiencing a swift transformation. Fresh analysis finds that New England is warming faster than almost anywhere else on the Earth.
The velocity of warming in New England makes it the most rapidly warming region of the contiguous United States, as per the research. The rate of its warming has reportedly increased notably in the last half-decade.
"Temperatures is not only rising, it's accelerating," said a primary researcher on the study. "It's really sped up in the past few years, which was unexpected to me. Our regional climate is moving in a new direction, after being largely consistent for thousands of years."
The analysis places the New England region among the fastest-warming areas in the world, alongside the polar region and parts of Europe and China. "New England is now heading towards being like the south-eastern US," the scientist noted.
For the analysis, researchers examined three datasets on daily temperature extremes and snowpack dating back to 1900. The review encompassed the six states of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut.
They found that New England has heated up by an mean of 2.5°C (4.5°F) from 1900 to 2024. This is substantially higher than the worldwide mean, with the planet warming by around 1.3°C in the comparable timeframe.
"That is very fast heating, which is worrying," commented the researcher.
A major cause for this exceptional build-up of heat may be shifts in the Atlantic Ocean. The world's oceans are absorbing the vast majority of the surplus thermal energy captured by emissions.
In the north Atlantic, an influx of meltwater from Greenland’s melting glaciers is slowing down the Atlantic current. This is directing heated ocean water into the Gulf of Maine, congregating heat along the shoreline that is then carried inland by wind patterns.
"Surplus thermal energy from climate change is being held in the oceans like a massive storage unit," said the researcher. "This is now being released into the air and New England is a recipient of that heat."
Once seen as a mild climate haven, New England has suffered severe weather shocks in the past decade, including devastating floods and extended dry spells.
The increasing temperatures endangers cherished elements of regional life:
"I reside just north of Boston and when I moved here in the 1990s I used to skate on the local ponds regularly," recalled the researcher. "That sort of thing has largely disappeared from much of the southern part of the region."
