More than 60,000 Flee Sudanese City After Seizure by Rapid Support Forces Militia, UN Says

Per the UN refugee agency, more than 60,000 individuals have escaped the city in Sudan of el-Fasher, which was seized by the paramilitary RSF recently.

Reports indicate summary killings and crimes against humanity as militia members took control of the city after an year-and-a-half siege characterized by famine and sustained attacks.

The movement of those fleeing the fighting towards the town of Tawila, approximately 80km (50 miles) to the west of el-Fasher, had grown in the past few days, per UNHCR spokesperson.

They were describing terrible accounts of abuses, such as rape, and the organization was having trouble to secure sufficient housing and supplies for them.

Each child was affected by undernourishment, she commented.

Calculations indicate that over 150,000 individuals are presently trapped in el-Fasher, which had been the military's remaining bastion in the western region of Darfur.

The Rapid Support Forces has denied broad allegations that the executions in el-Fasher are driven by ethnicity and mirror a practice of the Arab militia groups targeting non-Arab communities.

Yet the RSF has custodied one of its militiamen, Abu Lulu, who has been implicated in on-the-spot executions.

The organization distributed video revealing the militiaman's apprehension subsequent to confirmation that he was behind the killing of numerous non-combatants near el-Fasher.

Video sharing service has acknowledged that it has banned the profile linked to Lulu. Uncertainty exists whether he had controlled the account in his name.

Sudan was entered a internal conflict in April 2023 after a brutal struggle for power erupted between its military and the Rapid Support Forces.

This has caused a famine and accusations of ethnic cleansing in the western Sudan.

Over 150,000 persons have been killed in the fighting throughout the country, and about 12 million have abandoned their dwellings in what the UN has called the most extensive humanitarian disaster.

The capture of el-Fasher reinforces the territorial division in the country, with the RSF now in command of Sudan's west and a large portion of adjacent Kordofan to the southern area, and the army holding the capital, Khartoum, central and eastern regions along the coastal region.

The two warring rivals had been collaborators - coming to power together in a seizure of power in 2021 - but split over an globally supported initiative to transition to democratic governance.
