Following a conclusive runoff election, far-right figure José Antonio Kast has secured the presidential office in Chile.
With more than 99% of polling stations reporting, Kast won 58.17% of the vote, defeating leftist contender Jeannette Jara, who earned 41.83%.
This represents Kast's third attempt at the presidency, having earlier been lost by the sitting president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 second round.
Recognized for his strong socially conservative views and admiration for the period of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Kast's platform was mostly built on promises to address increasing insecurity and drastically curb immigration.
He repeatedly cited foreigners, especially the roughly 330,000 undocumented individuals in Chile, for crime rates. Throughout the campaign, he delivered an ultimatum for them to exit before the new term begins or face deportation.
