Former Treasury Secretary Summers Steps Down from OpenAI Board

Corporate Departure
The economist declared he would retreat from public positions after Congressional panel released his regular messages with Jeffrey Epstein

Former US treasury secretary the Harvard professor is exiting the board at the artificial intelligence firm, just several days after a batch of digital correspondence between him and late convicted sex offender the accused trafficker became widely known.

Summers commented in a release that he was "appreciative for the privilege to have contributed, excited about the promise of the enterprise, and anticipate observing their development".

Summers, who formerly led the prestigious university, declared on recently that he would be withdrawing from public commitments due to his relationship with Epstein.

Email Communications

The freshly disclosed emails demonstrated that the economist exchanged messages with Jeffrey Epstein until the 24 hours preceding Epstein's 2019 detention for suspected trafficking of young people.

In another announcement, the AI firm expressed it understood Summers' decision to step down.

"We acknowledge his many contributions and the insight he provided to the directors," the company commented.

Congressional Action

This development follows after both chambers of Congress decided on recently to pass a bill that would compel the federal prosecutors to disclose its files on Epstein.

The bill will subsequently move to the office of the White House for approval. Trump has indicated he expects to sign the legislation, after reversing his stance on the issue following pushback from his followers.

Message Details

A collection of Epstein-related emails released by the legislative panel recently included multiple well-known personalities in the billionaire's previous network, without indicating any criminal activity by those people.

The communications showed that Summers and the financier often met for meals, with Epstein often attempting to connect Summers to prominent world leaders.

Personal Accountability

After the emails were shared with the public, the former official said he took "total ownership for my poor decision to persist in communicating with the financier".

He continued that he wanted "to reestablish faith and repair bonds with the individuals closest to me".

Previous Positions

Summers held senior posts under two Democratic presidents; acting as treasury secretary under Bill Clinton, and as director of the economic advisory body under the former leader.

He led the institution from 2001 to 2006 and remains a professor there. When announcing his withdrawal from public commitments previously on Monday, he said he would continue his academic responsibilities.

Further Repercussions

Following his declaration on earlier this week, the Center for American Progress, a liberal research organization in the capital where Summers was a prominent member, confirmed that Summers was not associated with the group.

He joined the directorate of the AI company, which develops the AI chatbot, in the previous year - following a defeated move to oust its CEO the company leader.
