An new initialism came to light a couple of months into Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Known as WCNSF, it means “Injured child with no living relatives”. This acronym is found only in Gaza, according to doctors including child health specialists. Ordinarily, it is uncommon for physicians to treat a child who has lost their complete family. But, there has been nothing “normal” concerning the devastating conflict in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been wiped out and the number of young amputees is greater than that of any other region in the world. No sense of normalcy in scores of doctors returning from a sea of ruins with testimonies of children being intentionally shot at.
The Gaza Strip continues to be an utter catastrophe. Essential medical supplies are being blocked those in need, and major human rights organizations assert that atrocities are ongoing. Officials disputes these accusations, consistent with how it disavows each claim it is accused of. Yet as young survivors are now enduring frigid conditions in makeshift tent camps, there is a little heartwarming news: nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from pursuing its declared purpose of “togetherness and artistic sharing.” Eurovision will continue to extend a welcoming platform for Israel, despite the fact that at least four European countries have now boycotted in dissent. Because this, we are told, is what global togetherness manifests as.
The contest, notably prohibited Russia from participating in 2022 because of the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza seems treated differently.
Disregard the reality that Israel was accused of questionable voting tactics last year in what seems to have been an bid to manipulate Eurovision. Set aside the news that a young child was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza just days ago. Neglect the data that aggression from Israeli settlers and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Forget the fact that foreign reporters are still denied unfettered access in Gaza. This entire context, apparently, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.
The contest reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – almost double the average life expectancy of an individual in Gaza at present. The broadcast will air, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the camp joy it historically embodied. A competition that was originally built on togetherness has now become a transparent instrument to provide a cultural veneer for conflict.
