US air traffic controllers are more and more looking for additional employment and calling in sick, as they continue to work without pay amid the federal closure, the transportation secretary has stated.
"These professionals are becoming strained," Sean Duffy told a news outlet on the weekend, as certain aircraft were grounded on the Californian coast due to staffing shortages.
Following the government shut down on October 1st, flight controllers, who are considered critical staff, were instructed to continue performing their jobs uncompensated.
But a number have been missing, leading terminals to stop or slow their flight operations, which has added to setbacks caused by weather and additional factors.
More than three thousand American flights were delayed on the weekend, and the secretary said he anticipates the situation to deteriorate further.
"I observe the stress," he remarked in an interview on Sunday Morning Futures, adding that he had met with multiple professionals to listen to their concerns firsthand.
"They are pursuing side jobs, they're out there searching, 'Should I work for Uber, can I find another source of income to make ends meet?'" he added.
Duffy added that on the previous day twenty-two notifications at airfields said flights would be held up due to a shortage of workers - among the peak since the closure started.
The American federal closure entered its 26th day on the weekend, rendering it the second most extended halt in the past.
Duffy has repeatedly warned that flight authorities would reduce the number of aircraft in the air if there is a deficit of security staff.
In his conversation, he declined to respond directly when questioned if it was secure to travel by air in the United States, and instead issued a direct appeal to the professionals.
"I need my controllers focused on the flight paths, not on the finances at their households," the official stated.
On that day, certain flights were grounded at LAX due to employee deficits, causing disruption at the fifth-busiest terminal in the nation and one of the busiest in the world, as well as additional travel extending upward to the metropolis of Oakland.
The Federal Aviation Administration notice was issued at 08:45 in the morning on Sunday. Numerous trips were operating normally by midday.
Flights at Newark Airport, though, were postponed an average of 82 minutes due to personnel issues, and the authority indicated DFW, the second most active airfield in the country, could experience problems from reduced staff in the afternoon.
The agency advised travelers in California to consult airlines about updated departure times.
The issue precedes Game 3 of the championship, which is scheduled in LA on Monday evening, and approximately four weeks before the Thanksgiving holiday, among the peak periods to fly in the US.
Strain on American aviation helped end a government shutdown in two thousand nineteen. At the time, the shutdown had entered its fifth week and disrupted flight services, including pilot training.
