Although not quite at the equivalent scale as sparing festive fowl, but the mayor of Miami-Dade conducted a ceremonial pardon event this week by formally pardoning the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. She is worthy of this pardon. She has committed zero crimes,” stated the mayor in a speech with obvious nods to the sheer volume of executive clemencies issued from the start of the onset of a new presidential term.
“If we disregard eating six or seven apples per day,” the mayor added. “May this pig enjoy a long and happy life free from concern.”
This ceremony, simultaneously observing and challenging the area's customary feast of feasting on pork during the holidays, was created to replicate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The animal, donated by a first responder, was given its name from the popular vernacular phrase of young people yelling “six seven” – inspired by a hip-hop line – often seemingly at random. The trend became so widespread that a major dictionary recently named “six-seven” its top term for the year.
Six Seven the pig is now destined to live out its days at a countryside refuge “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“The pig pardon has become one of our favorite ways to kick off the end-of-year celebrations,” said the event host, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It embodies the spirit of Miami: joyful, diverse, and based in heritage that unite the community. Each year, we are proud to celebrate heritage and mercy in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Attendees enjoyed a vegetarian menu of croquettes and Cuban coffee as they toasted the pig's pardon.
